About the artist

for starters ...

Over the past forty-years, Marty Cohen has incorporated mixed media – including photographic cut-outs and found objects, into his abstract expressionist oil paintings and paper pieces, introducing new textural quality into his work, and exploring the idiosyncrasies of American popular culture.

He received his BFA degree from SUNY-Purchase, where he was inspired by abstract expressionism – which would figure largely into his own style; however, to classify him as an abstract expressionist one would have to unaware of his many different expressions in paint, pen and ink, and collages. Upon graduating SUNY, he studied at the Studio School, in New York City.

After some study at Studio School, he earned his MFA degree at Carnegie Mellon, where he furthered his artistic development through study with renowned artist Sam Gilliam.

then ...

Upon completion of his formal education, Marty began to exhibit at various galleries. His works have been acquired by corporate patrons, such as the Estée Lauder Companies, Eli Lilly and Company, Citigroup, and Bill Kurtis Productions.

Marty has been an exhibitor and curator with Fountain Gallery, since its inception, in 1995, and has presented six solo exhibitions there, as well as several group shows.

now ...

Marty incorporates mixed media, including photographic cutouts and found objects, in his abstract expressionist oil paintings and paper pieces, to introduce a textural quality and to explore elements of popular culture.

He has had solo shows at Vivian Horan Fine Art, Cooper Union, and Gallery New World Stages, and a two-person exhibit at the corporate headquarters of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. Solo and group shows at Fountain House Gallery include: Wishful, Sinful, Wicked You; Doors of ExpressionBody Language; Collaged Realities; and We Are Not Alone.

Marty has participated in dozens of group shows, and curated several Fountain House Gallery shows, where he is a founding member.

His corporate patrons include the Estée Lauder Companies Inc., Eli Lilly and Company, and Citi. Marty Cohen was a 2012 winner of the prestigious Wynn Newhouse Award, a program that provides grants to artists of excellence who happen to have disabilities.
